Spokesperson's Response to correspondents on the Approval of the US Congressional Resolution to Reiterate the Commitments to the Taiwan Relations Act
2004-07-17 00:00

Q It's reported that the US House of Representatives approved a congressional resolution to reiterate its commitments to the Taiwan Relations Act on July 15. What's your comment?

A: China resolutely opposes the approval of the Congressional Resolution by the US House of Representatives to reiterate the so-called commitments to the Taiwan Relations Act and has made solemn representations with the US side.

China has firmly opposed the Taiwan Relations Act enacted unilaterally by the United States in 1979, which is blatant violation of China's sovereignty and interference with China's internal affairs. We expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition towards the US House of Representatives for reiterating the commitments to the Taiwan Relations Act regardless of the principles of the three Sino-US Communiqués and the fundamental norms governing international relations.

China cherishes peace. The splitting activities of the "Taiwan independence" forces are the utmost threat to the current stability and peace across the Taiwan Straits. The resolution confused right with wrong, fabricated the Chinese military threat and advocated increasing weapon sales to Taiwan and raising the level of US-Taiwan military relationship. It will undermine not only peace and stability across the Straits and Sino-US relationship, but also the interests of the US side itself in the end.

It must be pointed that the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués constitute the political foundation of Sino-US relations and serve as the guiding principle for the two sides to deal with the Taiwan question. China has taken note that the US has repeated its commitment on many occasions to adhere to the one-China policy, abide by the three Sino-US Joint Communiqués and oppose "Taiwan independence". We urge the US Government to live up to its commitment, clearly oppose the above-mentioned resolution and take concrete steps to eradicate negative impact and maintain peace and stability across the Straits and as well as Sino-US relationship.
