Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Remarks of Opposition to "Taiwan Independence"
2004-08-26 00:00

Q: Recently, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed his opposition to "Taiwan independence" at a National Day rally. What comment does China have on this?

A: We have noticed that the new leader of Singapore reaffirmed in his speech that he will adhere to the one China policy and stand firmly against "Taiwan independence". This position serves the interests of Singapore, accords with the consensus of the international community and benefits peace and stability of the region.

The Chinese Government has a crystal clear position on the Taiwan question, and any country that has diplomatic relations with China has to observe the one China policy in deed. We are firmly opposed to the visits to Taiwan in any form by the leaders of countries with diplomatic ties with China. Such visits will only send wrong signals to the "pro-independence" forces in Taiwan.
