Position on the Statement of Irish side on the national security law for Hong Kong
2020-07-03 21:21

The Chinese side expresses its grave concern and strong opposition to the statement published on the website of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland on July 1st, in which groundless accusation was made against China's national security legislation for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Safeguarding national security is a sovereign right of any country. The promulgation and implementation of the law on safeguarding national security in HKSAR is both timely and necessary, and is in compliance with the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of HKSAR. The law targets only activities jeopardizing HKSAR and China's national security, and will provide a safer, more stable environment for Hong Kong, ensure the steady and sustained implementation of "One Country, Two Systems", and ensure that the Hong Kong residents can exercise their statutory rights and freedom in a better security environment.

We have left no one in doubt that no country could place its interests in HKSAR above China's sovereignty and national security interests, and peace, stability and prosperity of Hong Kong. Like the Irish people, the Chinese people including the people in Hong Kong will never again swallow the bitter fruit of foreign oppression and the nation being divided.

The Chinese side expects to make joint efforts with the Irish side, under the principle of equality and mutual respect, to build a sound and healthy China-Ireland relationship.
