Ireland-China Science and Technology Research Collaboration Fund

 An Ireland-China Research Collaboration Fund Agreement was co-signed on 19th December 2002, by Dr. William C. Harris, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Chinese Ambassador, His Excellency, Dr. Sha Hailin, on behalf of China Ministry of Science and Technology. The agreement, which comes into effect in January 2003, provides for exchanges of top class researchers in the fields underpinning Biotechnology, Information and Communications Technology and New Materials. It sets up a jointly funded programme to cover a four-year period from 2003 to 2006.  The total budget allocated amounts to 1 million. The Research Collaboration Fund will support a number of projects each lasting up to two years.

 The signing of this agreement is a follow up to the Framework Agreement on Scientific and Technological Co-operation between the Government of the People?s Republic of China and the Government of Ireland. This was signed by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, with responsibility for science and technology policy, Mary Harney, in September 2000 and approved by the Dáil in March 2001. 

The Tánaiste was present at the signing ceremony for Ireland-China Research Collaboration Fund Agreement and expressed welcome to the agreement. The agreement builds on the developing links between China and Ireland will help to promote and encourage co-operation in Scientific Research and Technological Development between Ireland and China. The Joint Research Fund has been designed to allow for an exchange of first-rate researchers in carefully targeted project areas of interests and of mutual benefit to both countries.
